Interpreting digital texts: Critical Media Literacy in the WL classroom
Session 3668
This session introduces participants to A Pedagogy of Multiliteracies (ML) as a useful framework to design learning activities targeting the development of critical media literacy, as foregrounded by the 21st century skills map for WL education. First, participants are led in a series of ML-oriented activities, which engage them in making mode-meaning connections in a sample digital text. Next, they learn about the concepts that underlie the ML framework and link them to the learning activities experienced at the beginning of the session. Participants then discuss learning activities from a sample curricular module on contemporary identities in France, and examine related learner data. Finally, they consider a sample digital text and brainstorm ML-oriented learning activities they can use in their own teaching contexts to foster students' development of interpretive communication and critical media literacy.
