This session presents a model for an institutional assessment of a university-wide language requirement followed by lessons learned from the process. Issues presented include the development of overarching goals of a language requirement, the complex nature of assessing multiple languages, the assessment of cultural knowledge, faculty buy-in, and using the results to improve student learning. In addition to analyzing the assessment methods used in this study, a discussion of how to design individualized assessment plans will follow. Participants will gain an understanding of how to apply the assessment methods to their program and to avoid problem areas.
