Teaching Varieties: Authentic Language in the German Classroom

German consists of many varieties, e.g., written vs. spoken, national, regional, and social. Students encounter varieties in authentic materials and in the target cultures. Thus, varieties need to be addressed in curricula. In the session, four presentations prepare teachers to approach varieties. Marc Pierce answers common questions: Why integrating varieties? When to start? Active or passive knowledge? How to design meaningful lessons? Joerg Meindl shows an approach to integrate national or regional varieties of standard German (from Austria, Switzerland, Southern Germany, …), presents authentic resources, and shows connections to lessons on culture, critical thinking, and intercultural competence. Alexander Lorenz presents a pedagogical approach, data on learning, resources, and specific strategies (e.g., role plays) to teach about Texas German. Carlee Arnett shows how variation can be addressed in literature on all levels, based on a lesson design for Medieval literature.
