Integrating Social Justice and Teaching Syria

Examples from teaching practices at different institutions illuminate effective approaches to increasing intercultural knowledge and competence regarding the challenges faced in the migration of Syrians into Europe. The focus is on the integration of Social Justice and gender issues. Contributions illustrate and assess pedagogy and learning scenarios for effectiveness across the German curriculum from beginning to advanced levels. Shared resources for poster competitions, department-wide projects, community engaged learning, reflections, uses of on-line games, as well as examples of texts and films offer the audience diverse ways of engaging students. Audience benefits from rich resources developed in diverse teaching and learning contexts, tried and assessed approaches, and shared reflections on the importance of developing empathy in intercultural teaching and learning, as well as exploring the potential for L2 learning interconnected with social justice and current events.
