Building Cultural Competency in Short Term Study Abroad Programs
This paper explores how the cultural competence can be effectively and lastingly increased in student participants in short term study abroad programs. It examines three specific tasks that have been implemented into two iterations of a short-term study abroad program in Sicily and how their inclusion has resulted significant gains in self-identified cultural competence. Data collection includes standardized surveys as well as qualitative responses from student participants that measure the effectiveness of the new method.
